Messolonghi is the capital of the prefecture of Aitoloakarnania. With a population of about 32 thousand inhabitants, it is one of the most uprising tourist destinations of the area. The city has a port and a marina, so in recent years it receives many visitors by sea, especially during the summer months. Whether you enjoy history or natural beauty, in Messolonghi you will find all kinds of interesting sights.
The best sights in Messolonghi :
1. Garden of Heroes
In the most historic part of the city you will find the Garden of Heroes. Originally the area here was once the walled city of Messolonghi, which was also the one that strongly resisted against the Turks during the Turkish occupation. Today here you will find various monuments that reveal the history of the area and the walls that have survived since then.
2. Messolonghi Lagoon
Next to the town of Messolonghi you will meet one of the most important ecosystems in Greece, the Messolonghi lagoon. In fact, here you will observe various species of rare birds and plants. Also the area is ideal to visit during the evening hours, during which you will definitely enjoy the unforgettable sunset.
3. Turlida beach
If you cross the city’s new cycle path you will find the beach of Tourlida. It is one of the favourite places of the locals especially during the summer months. The area is ideal for relaxing and swimming next to the city.

4. Salt Museum
Messolonghi is one of the regions with the largest salt production in Greece. This is evidenced by the existence of a museum dedicated exclusively to salt. In the Messolonghi Salt Museum you will learn about the method of salt production and you will be surprised by the unique collection of unique works of art made by salt. Moreover, the museum is located on the beach of Tourlida so you can combine it with your visit there.

5. Pelades settlement
When talking about top attractions at Messolonghi we could not leave out the historical settlement of Pelades. Specifically, you will meet it a little further out of the city and along the new bicycle path. Here you will find the wonderful little wooden houses rising from the surface of the water, resting on wooden beams. It is one of the sights that will literally take you back in time.
6. Ancient Plevrona
Just outside Messolonghi, you will find the archaeological site of ancient Pleurona. Pleurona is built on the slopes of a hill above the city and offers perhaps the most beautiful view of the Messolonghi lagoon. In fact, within the archaeological site you will find one of the most beautiful and well-preserved ancient theatres in the entire area.

6. Arakynthos mountain range
Our list of top attractions in the area would not be complete without mentioning the rich natural environment. If you enjoy hiking, the nearby Arakynthos mountain range is ideal for hiking. Here you will find countless trails through beautiful lush forests. In fact, at the top you will find the area’s fire lookout tower, which offers a wonderful panoramic view of Messolonghi and the surrounding areas.

7. Kleisoura Gorge and Holy Monastery of Agia Eleousa
Again, in the area of Arakynthos, you will find the gorge of Kleisoura and the Monastery of Agia Eleousa. This is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the area and it is only 15 minutes away from the city of Messolonghi. Here you can admire the monastery’s magnificent little church surrounded by the towering rocks of the gorge. Near the gorge, you can also find some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Aitoloakarnania.
