Lake Trichonida is located south of the city of Agrinio. It is the largest lake in Greece with a surface area of approximately 95.8 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 58 metres. Lake Trichonida was named after the ancient city of Aetolia, Trichonion, which is located on its southern shore and where there is a unique sanctuary of Asclepius. In ancient times it is assumed that the lake was also fed by the waters of the Acheloos River. Today the lake is fed by the waters of the surrounding mountainous areas and pours its waters into Lake Lysimachia, which in turn pours its waters into the river Acheloos.
In essence, the water of the lake is replaced and for this reason, it is considered one of the cleanest lakes in Greece. On its shores, there are countless small and large villages which offer various choices for relaxation by the lake. It is also noteworthy that the lake is home to unique species of flora and fauna, which is why it is included in the Natura protection network.
