Table of Contents
Toggle1. Trifos Waterfalls (Nissa Waterfalls - Agios Varvaros)
About half an hour outside of Vonitsa and one hour from Agrinio you will meet the waterfalls of Tryfos. The waterfalls of Tryfos are one of the most beautiful natural attractions of Aitoloakarnania and the wider region of west Greece. Hidden in a beautiful and verdant gorge, they are an oasis of relief especially during the summer months. You can read more about the waterfalls of Tryfos here.
2. Kleisoura Waterfalls
Kleisoura waterfalls are located next to the national road from Agrinio to Messolonghi and at the “entrance” of the homonymous gorge. It is noteworthy that they are perhaps the most easily accessible waterfalls in the prefecture, yet they remain unknown. To reach the lower waterfall you have to follow for a while the road that leads to the village of Ellinika after the village of Fragoulayika. From there you have to go down to the river and follow the river upstream until you reach the lower waterfall. After visiting the lower waterfall you can follow the road to the Ellinika village and visit the rest of the waterfalls at the top. However, keep in mind that the other waterfalls require a lot of experience and caution to reach them. Finally, be sure to visit sometime after rains as these are relatively seasonal waterfalls.
3. Kastanorema Waterfalls
At the foothills of Panitoliko mountain and next to the village of Kastanoula are the upper and lower waterfalls of Kastanorema. These are two of the most unexplored waterfalls of Aitoloakarnania. But the lower waterfall of Kastanorema is probably one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the whole prefecture. Despite their beauty, access to both waterfalls is difficult, requiring great experience in hiking and great care as there are no suitable paths. We recommend visiting them only with someone who knows the place.
4. Agia Paraskevi Waterfalls
Again at the foothills of Panetoliko mountain and above the village of Agia Paraskevi are located the Agia Paraskevi Waterfalls. In a small forest of plane trees it is an oasis of relief especially during the summer months. Once you reach the village of Agia Paraskevi the waterfall can be accessed via a dirt road either by a high vehicle or by a short hike. After seeing the lower waterfall you can continue on the path to the other smaller waterfalls at the top. However, here too you require a lot of experience and caution. Finally, be sure to visit sometime in spring or early summer when the water flow is still adequate.
5. Kakavos waterfalls
Next to the village of Perdikovrisi you will find one of the most beautiful places of the mountainous Nafpaktia. After a short hike from the path that starts from the village you will reach the Kakkavos Waterfalls. Eventually you will find the waterfall hidden in a beautiful lush landscape.
6. Twin waterfalls of Mokistianos (Twin waterfalls of Ag. Sophia)
Speaking of the waterfalls of Aitoloakarnania we could not leave out the twin waterfalls of Mokistianos. Remarkably, they are located in a hilly landscape near the small town of Thermos and just 40 minutes from Agrinio. The water starts its course from the springs of Agia Sophia in the village of the same name to flow after some kilometres into Lake Trichonida. The twin waterfalls of Mokistianou are located about halfway along the route in a steep and wooded landscape. You can read more about the twin waterfalls here.
7. Artificial Waterfall of Agios Nikolaos
The waterfall of Agios Nikolaos is not just another “natural” waterfall of Aitoloakarnania. However, it is located very close to Agrinio and is a beautiful place for a short excursion in nature. The trail starts from the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in the village of the same name near Agrinio. If you choose to visit it, it is advisable to first check the condition of the path as it has not been maintained in recent years.
8. Sitomena waterfall
Another unknown waterfall is the one above the village of Sitomena. It is one of the few waterfalls in the prefecture that end in deep waters ideal for swimming. Although it is one of the most beautiful in the prefecture, access here is also very difficult. We do not recommend visiting it except with someone who knows the place.
